(Y/N)'s PoV

It's been eight years since the human children were commandeered and taken underground, four years since Mika and the rest of my family escaped. At least, I hoped they had escaped. I was 16 now, 5' 4", and had developed a slightly more feminine body. I wasn't as curvy as my mother had been, but I was hopeful I would get there eventually. I had large, inquisitive (Eye Color) eyes and long (Hair Color) hair that I kept pulled back in a loose ponytail. About a year after Mika and the others left, I got too lonely, and allowed a younger pair of siblings to move in with me, since they reminded me of when I had a sort-of family of my own. They called me 'Onee-chan' so much, that I eventually gave in and changed my last name to (Last Name), to match their's.

Out of necessity, I continued giving blood to Ferid, the cruel vampire Noble, in exchange for money, extra food, books, toys, and other small favors. The other two, of course, had no idea. I also started working at the blood bank, as one of the people passing out the supplement shake to everyone, to earn extra money. Between those two activities, shopping, and scavenging, I had a full plate.

So it's no wonder I didn't notice him for four years.

"Mira-chan, I'm going out, look after your brother, okay?" I told the brown-haired, blue-eyed girl as I headed out the door and down the steps of what once was the Hyakuya Orphanage, out into Sanguinem.

Lately, all the good scavenging spots I normally frequented had been picked clean, so I decided to take a bit of a risk and head into the Nobles' district.

It wasn't strictly illegal to go there, but it was strongly advised against. Feeding off of and killing the livestock was illegal, but the majority of kids who'd been stupid brave enough to venture there had never come back out, and I could certainly see why. The buildings were large and elaborate, but between every building was a very dark alley, perfect for getting kidnapped in, and there was no one around; no witnesses.

Thankfully, what with the war and everything, there had been fewer vampires in the city, so I was less atraid to venture down the alleys in hopes of finding a dumpster or new scavenging dive. Of course, there was still the occasional city patrol, but I wasn’t too worried about those.

At least, not until one saw me slip up onto a roof in search of discarded rations. The tiles were rough, broken, and uneven under my bare feet, but after years of the same rough treatment, my feet had built up a resistance, same as everyone’s here, and I wasn’t bothered by it.

What did bother me was that I heard very light footsteps falling behind me, but when I turned to look, there was no one there. I thought I saw a white cloak, flapping from a sudden breeze, but I was mistaken.

I was amazed at this whole other world contained within the same city. On our side, the humans’ side, the buildings were old, dilapidated, crumbling, moldy, and covered in strange, gothic spirals and gargoyles. Here, on the vampires’ side, the buildings were new, and I could only assume the piping for heat and water were actually inside the walls, the way they were supposed to be, and there were still spires and gargoyles, but they complimented the architecture, as if they were meant to be there.

All of a sudden, I heard a kind of wheezing, and coughing, coming from behind a chimney stack behind me, proving what I had earlier thought, that someone was there, following me. I turned, body freezing up against my will. I saw a bit of cape sticking out, and a coarse voice muttered, “Yu-chan…it hurts…”

My (Eye Color) eyes widened in shock, horror, and hope. The only one that had called Yuichiro ‘Yu-chan’ had been the blond I held so dear, but he was supposed to have escaped from this hell four years ago. Then again, he had also promised to come back for me, once he found a cure for the virus. Had he? But it had been four years. If he hadn't found the cure within the year, he and Yu would died. And if he had found it, he would have come sooner.

"M-Mika-kun...?" I asked hesitantly, stepping toward the chimney. I knew it was insane. For all I knew, he and the others had died that day, or escaped and forgotten me, or escaped and then died. "Is that you?"

The wheezing stopped suddenly, and after a moment the cloak shifted and was pulled behind the chimney, because the vampire stood up. He was tall, with curly blond hair, and pale skin. His right hand clutched over his heart, as though he were in agony, and his blue eyes were dull and glazed with pain and self-loathing. I blinked, and the strange blue-eyed vampire disappeared, leaving me unsure as to whether I had seen him, or my brain had showed me what it thought I wanted to see, a mirage of my long-lost childhood friend and companion.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Whatever it was that day, it wasn't a one-time thing, because I kept seeing a blonde vampire out the corners of my eyes, never quite there, gone the instant I turn to look. It was almost enough to drive me mad, wondering, hoping, that he was alive and here, and hating myself for allowing me to hope.

We'd had hope, once, and I'd nearly died of blood loss.

One afternoon, a few weeks later, I was coming back from work, exhausted, as usual, crossing the rooftops easily to avoid people and vampires alike. I opened the trap door I'd installed to the old orphanage and dropped inside, just as Dai, my new little brother, opened the door excitedly, revealing the blond vampire from weeks ago. Dai froze in fear and stared up at his blue eyes, stepping backwards.

A-and I'm not sure I'd even call it a smile-but a moment of peace appeared to wash over the vampire, and he squatted down to Dai's level and reached out to pat his head.

Mira rushed in and grabbed Dai, pulling him back, and swatted the blond's hand away. She pulled Dai back, falling over in the process, and eyed the vamp in fear and hatred. He didn't say a word, but stood, an expression I knew well on his face.

That was the face I made when I was hurting, aching, dying, inside, and didn't want anyone to see.

He stood and turned, walking out the door, all in one smooth motion. Mira and Dai hadn't yet seen me, so I jumped back up through the trap door and chased the blond down. I finally caught up with him, and grabbed his sleeve. He turned to glance down at me.

"What do you want, human?" He asked coldly, shaking me off. "I'm busy."

I scoffed. "Busy my ass. You had enough spare time to visit an out-of-the-way human orphanage. But that's not important. Are you really Mika??" I gazed up at the blond with hopeful (E/Y) eyes. His mouth tightened and he turned, wrenching his sleeve from my grip.

His answer, spoken quietly with a voice dripping with venom, grief, and loathing, pierced my heart.

    "Not anymore."

Realized a week ago that I forgot to post the second part to this....So I decided to put it off until little Mika's birthday~~! Happy birthday to the little fluff~~!
Hope you enjoy~~!
